Overview
What is diversity? In this module, will define alpha and beta diversity and explore why researchers use diversity metrics to describe microbial communities.
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- MO 3.1. Define alpha and beta diversity.
- MO 3.2. Explain three different diversity metrics.
- MO 3.3. Identify and describe the limitations and assumptions of certain diversity metrics.
We will introduce definitions of microbial diversity, ways of measuring it, and the differences between alpha and beta diversity. The video resources will provide real-world examples and an application of UniFrac.
In this module, we will also annotate and discuss a second article. Remember to annotate using Hypothes.is under the Exploring Biodiversity group. The second group will be responsible for the summary.
Complete Top Hat questions to retrieve the knowledge you learned from the video assignments and reading.
We have revised the Student Help Forum to help sort questions with more descriptive titles. Change your subscription settings to receive alerts for the threads or the forum.
As you read the article and respond to Top Hat questions, keep in mind how you would use diversity measurements for your research or future studies.
