First in-person lab session tomorrow

Tomorrow is our first in-person meeting to get to know each other and work together to prepare 94 samples for metagenomic sequencing.

We will meet in Jordan Hall 6136 at 12: 50 PM. To get here, go to the lobby of Jordan Hall (the one with the Natural Resources Library) and take the elevator to the sixth floor. The lab is the last one down the hallway past the bathrooms.

Masks are required, and we will provide lab coats, eye protection, and gloves. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. No sandals allowed.

Please review the LabArchives protocol for tomorrow. Since we have so many samples, we will use a liquid handler to more efficiently (and reproducibly) work with samples. Our first task is to dilute the genomic DNA to 1 ng/ul before setting up PCR reactions to amplify the 16S and ITS gene regions we are interested in using to identify organisms in these samples.

At 3:30 pm, Dr. Erin McKenney is coming to discuss the samples and project you are all involved with!

Moodle is our hub: please complete Module 0 and start Module 1 this week.

Finally, as part of our efforts to improve bioinformatics education, I am conducting an educational study that involves two surveys. I will send out a separate email describing the study. Participation is voluntary. I do appreciate your time and input!

Take care and we will see you tomorrow!
